Essential Tips

When dealing with leaks from toilets, sinks, or other plumbing fixtures, it's crucial to shut off the water supply promptly. For toilets, locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet near the floor and turn the handle clockwise until it stops. This will shut off the water supply to the toilet tank. For sinks, the shut-off valves are typically found under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water, and should be turned clockwise to shut off the supply. If the shut-off valve itself is leaking, you may need to tighten the packing nut or replace the valve if necessary.

If the leak is severe or if you cannot locate the specific shut-off valve, you may need to shut off the main water supply to your home. The main shut-off valve is usually located near the water meter or where the water line enters your home, often in basements or along exterior walls. If your main shut-off valve has a wheel, turn it counter-clockwise to shut off the water. If it has a straight handle, turn it a quarter-turn clockwise until the water stops. Once the water is off, it's a good idea to call a plumber to assess and fix the leak.

Additional Considerations:

  • If you are really concerned about a water leak, you can have an advanced detection system installed.
  • Know how and where to turn off the water to anything that uses water.
  • Know how to shut off the main water line to your house.
  • Consider using a water leak detector in and around HVAC, clothes washers,
under sinks, or near hot water heaters.
