Defensible Space Zones
Defensible space is divided into three key zones:
- Zone 0 (0-5 feet from home)
- Remove all vegetation, mulch, and debris.
- Use hardscaping (gravel, concrete) instead of flammable plants.
- Store trash bins and propane tanks at least 5 feet away.
- Use noncombustible fencing for the first 5 feet attached to the home.
- Zone 1 (5-30 feet from home)
- Space shrubs and plants twice their height apart to slow fire spread.
- Install an irrigation system to keep plants hydrated.
- Relocate sheds, boats, and other outbuildings at least 30 feet away.
- Park vehicles on noncombustible surfaces like gravel or asphalt.
- Zone 2 (30-100 feet from home)
- Keep fire pits, BBQ grills, and woodpiles at least 10 feet from flammable materials.
- Maintain a noncombustible buffer around large propane tanks.
- Clear dead vegetation, dry grasses, and tree limbs regularly.
Structural Hardening for Wildfire Resistance
- Roofs & Gutters: Use Class A roofing materials like metal or composite shingles. Install gutter covers to prevent debris buildup.
- Windows & Doors: Upgrade to double-pane tempered glass and use metal window frames for added protection.
- Vents & Openings: Install 1/8-inch corrosion-resistant ember-resistant vents in attics and crawl spaces.
- Decks & Carports: Use fire-resistant decking materials and enclose open areas under decks with noncombustible skirting.
