Essential Tips

Defensible Space Zones

Defensible space is divided into three key zones:

  • Zone 0 (0-5 feet from home)
    • Remove all vegetation, mulch, and debris.
    • Use hardscaping (gravel, concrete) instead of flammable plants.
    • Store trash bins and propane tanks at least 5 feet away.
    • Use noncombustible fencing for the first 5 feet attached to the home.
  • Zone 1 (5-30 feet from home)
    • Space shrubs and plants twice their height apart to slow fire spread.
    • Install an irrigation system to keep plants hydrated.
    • Relocate sheds, boats, and other outbuildings at least 30 feet away.
    • Park vehicles on noncombustible surfaces like gravel or asphalt.
  • Zone 2 (30-100 feet from home)
    • Keep fire pits, BBQ grills, and woodpiles at least 10 feet from flammable materials.
    • Maintain a noncombustible buffer around large propane tanks.
    • Clear dead vegetation, dry grasses, and tree limbs regularly.
Structural Hardening for Wildfire Resistance
  • Roofs & Gutters: Use Class A roofing materials like metal or composite shingles. Install gutter covers to prevent debris buildup.
  • Windows & Doors: Upgrade to double-pane tempered glass and use metal window frames for added protection.
  • Vents & Openings: Install 1/8-inch corrosion-resistant ember-resistant vents in attics and crawl spaces.
  • Decks & Carports: Use fire-resistant decking materials and enclose open areas under decks with noncombustible skirting.

Safety Considerations

  • Fire-resistant building materials (fiber cement siding, stucco, metal roofing).
  • Noncombustible fencing and decking to prevent fire spread.
  • Metal ember-resistant vents for attics and crawl spaces.
  • Fire-rated weather stripping for doors and windows.
  • Metal gutter covers to prevent debris buildup.
