Essential Tips

Dryer
  • Clean the Lint Filter: Always remove lint from the filter after every load of laundry to prevent buildup.
  • Inspect the Vent: Check the dryer vent hose regularly for blockages or lint buildup.
  • Professional Cleaning: Schedule a professional cleaning of your dryer vent at least once a year to ensure it’s clear of debris.
  • Use the Right Materials: Replace plastic or foil vent hoses with rigid or flexible metal ducts that resist kinking and reduce lint accumulation.
  • Avoid Overloading: Don’t overload your dryer, as this can increase drying times and cause overheating.
Washer
  • Do not operate when you are away.
  • Cramming too many clothes into the machine can strain the motor, leading to overheating, circuit failure, or even ignition of flammable materials
  • Unplug the machine before cleaning or maintenance.
  • Keep the area around the washer free from flammable materials.
  • If you have young children, purchase washer with automatic lid/door locks.
  • To assist with water leaks, utilize a drain pan below the washer to capture any water.
  • Replace hoses every 2–3 years, or every five years, even if they appear undamaged. Use hoses with metal casing for better protection.
  • Install a water leak detector near the washing machine for early alerts. Smart models can send alerts to your phone and some can automatically shut off the water supply when a leak is detected.
  • Consider using a simple audible alarm that detects moisture and place it behind the washer.
  • Leave at least four inches of space between the wall and the washer to prevent hoses from kinking
